Spanish songs for children
Student Suzanne forwarded several links to Spanish songs for children. “It is a bit childish,” she said. However, the great thing about songs for children is that they stick in your head all day long… and let that be exactly what we want with all those Spanish words.
Huevos rotos / estrellados
Student Mascha sent us the recipe for the famous Spanish dish huevos rotos (broken eggs), also called huevos estrellados (collapsed eggs). The origin of this recipe, like so many famous Spanish recipes, is questionable. There are several stories, but by far the most famous story is that of Cervantes. In the first chapter of his book El Quijote (1605) he talks about a dish that many consider to be the precursor of the current recipe. Follow this link to read more about the origin of the recipe.
You can download Mascha’s recipe by clicking on the photo below.
¡Buen provecho!

El origen de la sangría

There are various stories about the origin of the (for us) typical Spanish drink Sangría (with the emphasis on the i). One theory says that the drink originated in English colonies. The English called it Sangaree. Because this name contains part of the Spanish word for blood: sangre, and because of its red color, the Spaniards baptized the drink Sangría.
By clicking on the link below, you can read an interesting article that also discusses other theories about the origins of Sangría. Of course in Spanish, ¡olé!
Ensalada pipirrana
Student Laura brought along a recipe for a fresh, summer salad during one of the lessons. Originally, the Pipirrana is an Andalusian salad. Nowadays, there are several variants known throughout Spain. As Laura’s recipe was in Dutch, we looked up the original recipe for you on YouTube. Take a look and hear the explanation of an authentic Andaluza on how to prepare the salad.
Laura’s advice: have a nice glass of vino tinto with it or while you are making the salad 😉
Rebujito
Student Fred told us he loves to listen to music from Los Rebujitos. And so do we: this Andalusian band plays wonderful Flamenco pop. At the same time, Fred inspired us to share the recipe for a Rebujito with you. The name of the before mentioned band is derived from the Andalusian counterpart of sangria: el Rebujito. During the world-famous ferias in Andalucía, people drink pints full of this mix! We say: ¡SALUD!

Clock to practise
Student Diana shares her clock to practise with us. She printed this image in a large format and hung it next to the clock at her workplace. This way, every time she checks to see if she can stop working, she will practice telling the time in Spanish. Click on the image to download the larger document and follow her lead.

Listen, read and learn
Two students sent us this video during the Covid crisis. A little bit of felicidad was more than welcome at the time. And you immediately gain some extra Spanish knowledge.
